Family Dining
All students in Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 sit and eat their breakfast and lunch together in their respective Year Groups. Breakfast is complimentary and includes toast, cereal and juice. We call this ‘Family Breakfast’. In addition, all year groups will sit and eat ‘Family Lunch’ together. Both meals are provided by our catering partner Sodexo.
At Q3 Academy Langley all our colleagues believe in developing the whole child in addition to their academic skills. Our ethos ‘To Seek for which is good, right and true.” can be seen in action at meal times. Breakfast and Lunch is the perfect time to teach our students how to be good, right and true in practice and on a daily basis.
Instead of a traditional school canteen culture where pupils can sometimes leave their trays behind, expecting an anonymous cleaner to clean up after them, at Q3 Academy Langley, pupils do not only clean up after themselves. They clean up after each other. They demonstrate kindness and a sense of responsibility – acting in a good, right and true manner fitting with our Christian ethos.
Students have specific roles at both Family Breakfast and Lunch. A student will collect the food for the day, one will ensure the table is laid and another will serve. One will serve drink. In addition at the end of the meal different students will collect the plates and cutlery and take back to the cleaning area. No table of students will be allowed to leave and go to play outside or back to lessons without having their area inspected and passed by a learning consultant or another member of staff.
We use these times together in a very similar fashion to a traditional assembly. Students will walk into the eating area calmly and in silence and then be addressed by a member of the staff body – usually the Head of School or Personalised Learning Director who will use a microphone to ensure each meal time is a special occasion whatever the day and a stimulating time away from the learning room.
At Q3 Academy Langley we serve two options – a meat and vegetarian dish each day. All our food is freshly prepared on site and by our Sodexo team.
All our Learning Consultants sit and eat with the pupils and we encourage any guests to join us for breakfast or lunch. Adults can play an important role in modelling the art of conversation and good manners at the dinner table. Students are encouraged to speak correctly and in full sentences and reflect on their learning for the day or wider issues both locally and nationally.
At the end of each serving appreciations are held and students are encouraged to be kind, respectful and thankful of others as they go about their daily life in the Academy.
We do not operate a traditional morning break canteen style service. Therefore, students are allowed to bring in appropriate snacks to consume at this time. These snacks are at the discretion of the Head of School and must no contain nuts.
